DSC03766Year 1 trip to the Natural History Museum Year One visited the Natural History Museum on Wednesday. They saw fossilised dinosaur bones and learned from ‘Dino Dan’ that they had turned to stone. They then got a chance to all touch part of a dino-saurs back bone from thousands of years ago! Thank you to all the grown-ups who helped on the day and well done to all the boys who were extremely well behaved even on the very long coach trip back to school.

Screen Shot 2016-11-21 at 14.41.45On Tuesday Year 7 spent a cold, but fascinating day at The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford conducting geographical fieldwork. The site at Stratford was developed with sustainability in mind – that future generations would have access to the same resources and enjoyment of the environment as we do. Before work started on the Park in 2007, it was a brownfield site- with old factories, derelict homes and polluted soil and waterways. It was even home to an iconic eyesore-Fridge Mountain- a six metre high pile of discarded whitegoods, believed to be the largest in Europe.
In the lead-up to the Games, the site was cleared and the soil decontaminated. London’s largest park in 150 years was created with 15 acres of woodland and 6km of waterways cleaned. 18,000 jobs were also created, which led to the regeneration of Stratford as [...]

Screen Shot 2016-11-08 at 11.18.07This week, Year 2 visited The Royal Gunpowder Mills. The boys watched a comic re-enactment of the events leading up to the Gunpowder Plot . They attended various workshops which involved making lanterns, quill pens and playing with games which existed when Guy Fawkes was alive. Leon Georgio and Karthik Nair were the champion cup and ball holders; they had to try and swing the ball at the end of the ball into a cup and they succeeded! This game was banned during Guy Fawkes times because it was seen as a time waster. The boys even learnt some dance steps. They found out about the different types of food people ate in the past; it included rats and mouldy bread! We all had an enjoyable trip.

Year 8 trip to the River Chess

Screen Shot 2016-10-15 at 03.28.56 On Thursday Year 8 spent a cold, rainy but very enjoyable day at The River Chess in Amersham conducting geo-graphical fieldwork. The boys investigated how the features of the river changed as it flowed from its source in Chesham, to its confluence with the River Colne some 18km away. Much of the day was spent in the river calculating the channel depth and width, investigating the velocity of the water and the bedload size and sphericity. Alongside more familiar equipment, the boys also got the opportunity to use more sophisticated fieldwork equip-ment such hydroprops. The primary data collected at the River Chess will be written up as a project that forms part of the require-ments of the Common Entrance Exam in geography.
