On Tuesday 28th February, Mrs Brace was invited to speak at an event jointly hosted by the Royal Geographical Society and the Independent Association of Prep Schools. In the session she shared some of her approaches to model making. Model making is a creative and inspiring way in which to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key geographical features and processes. Models engage; they help the boys to visualise the real world in a way that diagrams cannot.

At Keble, the boys are familiar with using plasticine, cardboard, polystyrene and other media to portray the physical and human world. The 50 attendees, all Heads and teachers of Geography from a range of London Prep schools, were also given the opportunity to impress Mrs Brace by making their own model, in cake, to show how caves, arches, stacks and stumps are [...]

Year 8 trip to the River Chess

Screen Shot 2016-10-15 at 03.28.56 On Thursday Year 8 spent a cold, rainy but very enjoyable day at The River Chess in Amersham conducting geo-graphical fieldwork. The boys investigated how the features of the river changed as it flowed from its source in Chesham, to its confluence with the River Colne some 18km away. Much of the day was spent in the river calculating the channel depth and width, investigating the velocity of the water and the bedload size and sphericity. Alongside more familiar equipment, the boys also got the opportunity to use more sophisticated fieldwork equip-ment such hydroprops. The primary data collected at the River Chess will be written up as a project that forms part of the require-ments of the Common Entrance Exam in geography.

IMG_2129Year 6 went to the Royal Academy of Arts where they visited the Ai Weiwei exhibition . A bold and controversial artist. The boys were fascinated and inspired by his work. Later they attended a workshop about the artist, his work and his life in China. Ai Weiwei had produced wallpaper for the exhibition which was a statement about his confinement at home and the role of twitter in allowing him to communicate with the outside world. The boys went on to use printing techniques to produce wallpaper of their own. Their brief was to reflect something they wished to highlight or protest about.

At the end of the day the volunteers from the Royal Academy, who had accompanied the boys around the gallery and worked with them during the workshop, remarked on the behaviour of the boys, their enthusiasm and engagement. They described them as an [...]

16th – 18th September 2015

On the first day we visited Cadbury’s World. The boys enjoyed looking around the exhibition (the history of chocolate and chocolate making) and visited the factory to see chocolate being packaged. The 4D cinema and shop were also highlights.

The second day was spent at Carding Mill Valley undertaking geographical fieldwork, a river study measuring the velocity and discharge of the river. The boys also undertook a Bi-polar Environmental Survey and a Visitor Questionnaire focused on Carding Mill as a sustainable tourist resort. At the end of the second day we also visited Ironbridge.

On the third day we visited Enginuity. The boys enjoyed the exhibition- the science involved (forces) and the boys volunteered for various demonstrations.

Perran Gill,

Mr-McCarthy
It was so fantastic being at the gate this morning and seeing the boys arrive in their wacky ties. It is amazing how just to see how just a minor tweak to the school uniform can bring about such excitement. This continued into break where the cake sale and sporing competitions created an even bigger buzz. Having just found some other monies, I am very proud to announce that our final figure is £819, which will go to those suffering terrible hardship in Nepal.
Those who saw me at the gate will have noticed a snazzy and stylish bowtie, which was, i am afraid, the nearest I could get to a ‘wacky’ item. I used to have plenty of suitable ties for the occasion but sadly they did not make it past my getting married the year before last. A vicious cull saw not [...]

The boys in Reception dressed up as pirates for their special ‘Big Toddle’ walk in order to raise money for Dr Barnardo’s.
It was especially challenging to walk to Grovelands Park and around the lake three times as it was such a hot day but the boys
rose to the challenge and managed the task well!

Back in February I wrote here about Keble’s involvement with a scheme called “Bike It Plus” which is run by the charity SUSTRANS and aims to encourage greater bike and scooter use by pupils and parents. We’ve had several visits from our SUSTRANS ambassador James Taylor during the year and he’s been working with a group of Year 7 and 8 boys on activities like “the Big Pedal” – an inter-class competition in the run-up to the Easter holiday to see who could do the most journeys by bike or scooter. Y6S emerged triumphant, and their reward is a visit to the Olympic BMX track later this month.

Bike It Plus is just one of several strands which make up Keble’s Travel Plan, something every school in London has to update each year and submit to TfL for accreditation. Last year Keble achieved silver and [...]
